William N. Meeks passed away peacefully the evening of Monday, October 17, 2016, in Mobile, Alabama, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 80 years old. Bill, known as “Nathaniel” or “Nat” by his siblings, was born on January 17, 1936, in Johnson County, Georgia. He was the fourth of six children born to Lila Pearl Walden and Winton McKinley “Jack” Meeks and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sarah Elizabeth Calderwood Wilson Meeks, daughter Colleen Meeks Dudeck (Kevin) of Mobile, daughter Heather Meeks Hickox (Patrick) of Fairhope, son William Walden Meeks of New York, grandchildren Jacob Reilly Clover of New Orleans, Hunter Patrick Hickox of Athens, Georgia, Kaitlin Grace Clover of Brighton, Michigan, Savannah Elizabeth Hickox of Pensacola, FL., siblings Dannie Carolyn of Lake Placid, Florida, and Winton Laranzie of Milledgeville, Georgia, numerous brothers-in-law, sisters in-law, nieces and nephews in the U.S. and abroad in England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
Bill was preceded in death by his daughter Sharon Leslie Meeks, his parents, Lila and Jack Meeks, brothers John Clayton Meeks and Jack McKinley Meeks, and his sister, Lawania June Bloodworth.
Bill retired from the Affirmative Action Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a faithful member of Covenant Church of Mobile for nearly 40 years. He was a man of quiet strength with a deeply-held faith in God and a strong devotion to his family. He demonstrated perseverance in the face of adversity, and he overcame each obstacle in his life with unwavering resiliency. He enjoyed playing cards and fishing with close friends Archie Allred, Ferrill Gibbs, and Guy Binegar. He loved spending quality time with his grandchildren. He appreciated the arts and classical music and was an avid reader as well as a fan of Georgia football.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00 to 11:00 at Covenant Church of Mobile, followed by a Celebration of Life service from 11:00 to 12:00.
