Mr. William Augustine Haupt – A native of Hollis, NY and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama, died Monday July 20, 2015 at the age of 94. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Augustine R. and Helen Fitzgerald Haupt. He is survived by his devoted wife Rebecca “Beckie” Purvis Haupt who he loved dearly and with whom he had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary; daughter Monica (Mike) Thompson of Mobile; sister-in-law Tut McKibbin of Mobile; grandchildren B. Hays (Amy) Thompson, Greg (Kimberly) Thompson, Anna Freeman; five great-grandhildren; a host of very close nieces, nephews, and cousins from the McKibbin, Hussey, and Cornell families, and other relatives and friends. He was a devoted father and husband who loved his family dearly and was very close to all of his relatives, including his best friends, brother-in-laws Frank McKibbin and Mike Hussey who predeceased him. Bill was a proud and loyal alumnus of Chaminade Catholic High School in Mineola, NY and Springhill College in Mobile. He moved to Mobile at the age of 18 to attend Springhill College where he graduated in 1944. He met Beckie on a blind date and they married in 1945 at St. Joseph’s Chapel at the College. They moved to New York shortly later only to return five years later to make Mobile their permanent home. Bill was a charter member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church where he served as a faithful volunteer for many years in numerous capacities to include Church Historian and was bestowed the inaugural Christ the King Medal for his service to the Corpus Christi community. He was an extremely outgoing and giving person who loved to make new friends. This was always evident through his 51½ year employment at Calagaz Photo Supply where he met and befriended hundreds of people over his thoroughly enjoyable career. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Corpus Christi Church from 9:00-11:00 AM, followed by a Funeral mass with internment at Springhill Cemetery. This will be followed by a reception at Little Sisters of the Poor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor or the Corpus Christi Catholic Church Building Fund. The family wishes to acknowledge the kind and professional care rendered by all of the clergy and staff at Little Sisters of the Poor and Dr. Adrian Bodet. They also would like to express deep appreciation to the entire Calagaz family who treated Bill as one of their own for many years extending well pass his retirement.
