Born in Mobile, Alabama to the late Rose Stewart and George H. Crawford, Shirley, at age 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Her last days were spent surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Charles B. Banks, Sr., and her sister Georgia Crawford. She is survived by her eight children: Charles Banks of Arlington, TX, Calvin Banks of Midland City, AL, Anthony Banks of Semmes, AL, Deborah Banks of Mobile, AL, Lauretta Clausen of Spanish Fort, AL, Anita Taylor Dowd of Bakersville, NC, Sharon Parks of Macclenny, FL, and Stephen Banks of Cheney, WA. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Brandon Banks, Blaine Banks, Blaire Hoeppner, Daniel Clausen, Russell Thomas Taylor, James Taylor, and Jacob Parks; and her two great-grandchildren. Shirley was a long time parishioner of St. Pius X where she was an active member of the Legion of Mary. She was a devoted wife and mother who spent her early adult life caring and providing for her family and their home. A life long learner, she returned at the age of 68 to obtain her GED, before matriculating to Faulkner University where she received her AA Degree with honors. Returning to the workforce after an absence of almost 51 years, she worked as a Supervisor at Sears Telemarketing Center until she retired. Shirley was a talented seamstress, an avid reader, an excellent cook and an enthusiastic gardener. A friend to many, her door was always open to share a cup of coffee and a listening ear.
The memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel at Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile AL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Little Sisters of the Poor-Mobile via their website at www.littlesistersofthepoor.org.
