Sarah Martha Bradley Edwards was born January 28, 1925 to Mamie Rae Colvin Bradley and Sam Bob Bradley in Greens Island, Arkansas, weighing only three pounds – and only due to her grandmother, Martha Ann Colvin, did Sarah survive, for Sarah’s mother passed away from complications of childbirth when Sarah was but three months old. Sarah moved to Mobile, Alabama after graduating from high school in Arkansas, and went to work at Brookley Air Field during the war, as a “Rosie the Riveter”, putting parts in planes. After the war, she worked at Alabama Power Company for over thirty years, eventually retiring. Sarah was a member of Woodridge Baptist Church for several years, and always attended when able.
Sarah is preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, John F. Edwards, Jr.; and her son-in-law, Jack A. Tomberlin.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Ann Tomberlin (Jack) and Betty Jackson (Keith); three granddaughters, Martha Allyson Tomberlin Blankenship (Chris), Mindy Tomberlin Downey (Brad), and Abby Tomberlin Martin (Tony); five great-grandchildren, Sarah Kelsey Blankenship Guy (Jadon), Brey Blankenship, Anna Kathryn Blankenship, Adam Tillman, Lauren Tillman Skorobogatov (Alex), Madison Tillman, and Kyleigh Ann Martin; two great-great grandchildren, Payton Tillman and Noah Skorobogatov; sister-in-law, Maggie Burris (Charles Larry); special family: Jerry D. Colvin (Felecia), Jesse M. Colvin (Selia), Carla Schunck (Carl), Sam Colvin (Jo); and her dearest friend and caregiver, Doris Shaw.
Visitation for Sarah will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
Sarah and her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Springhill Hospice, especially Annetta Lockett and Jessica Morris, for all of the wonderful care they bestowed upon Sarah.
