Roland L. Williams, Jr. - Passed away at home on Friday, October 1, 2010, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born on March 18, 1937, to Roland L. Williams, Sr. and Ethel Nesbitt Williams, who preceded him in death. Although he was born in Birmingham, he lived his life in Mobile. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gwin Anderson Williams; his children, Anne (Gary) Holt of Pensacola, Susan (Jesse) Jones of Mobile and Douglas M. Williams of Lake Charles, LA; his brother, T. Clyde (Pat) Williams of Mobile. He was "Daddy Rolo" to Christopher Holt, Natalie Holt, Kendall Turk, Madison-Gwin Williams, and Desire' Jones. His many nephews, one niece and their children were all very dear. Roland graduated from Auburn University in 1959, after a brief stint in Civil Service at Brookley Air Force Base. He then began a long career at the University of South Alabama. Twenty-nine years later, he retired from the University Medical School as Director of Health Services. His joys were his family, and fishing, hunting and golfing with the many friends who enriched his life. He was an ordained deacon, and while at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, he served on the Personnel, Scholarship, and Building and Grounds Committees. He was always ready to make deliveries to the Salvation Army Women's and Children's Shelter, and for ten years, made that a priority. A private burial service will be held with his nephews and sons-in-law serving as pallbearers. A memorial service will be held from Spring Hill Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.
