R. L. Constantine, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 20th, 2023 surrounded by family on Mobile Bay, a place he loved dearly and spent much of his life. He will always be remembered for his quick wit and lovable sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Constantine, Sr. and Emma Bullen Constantine; his wife of 43 years, Helen Knowles Constantine; his daughter, Donna C. Zimlich; and his son, Anthony Daniel (Tony) Constantine; his siblings: Roberta C. Bourg, Elizabeth C. Barnett, Claire Louise C. O’Connor, Lillian C. O’Connor, and Andrew J. Constantine. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Elizabeth M. (Libba) Constantine; her daughters: Ashlee Moore (Terry) and Tracie Kennedy (Chris); his sister, Denise C. Painter; his sons: Robert L. Constantine, III (Tela), David Patrick Constantine, and Gary Stephen Constantine (Stephanie); and 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was a graduate of McGill Institute Class of 1945. After High School, he joined the U. S. Navy serving aboard the USS ARD-20 in the Philippine Islands from June 1945 until June 1946. After returning home, he attended Auburn University and graduated from Spring Hill College with the Class of 1950.
He played competitive tennis into his 80’s ceasing only when advised by doctors to do so. He also faithfully served as an usher at St. Matthews Catholic Church every Saturday evening.
He loved his God, his family, his country and his many friends. He was an avid fisherman and dove hunter who was highly successful at both. He was a member of two Mystic Societies which he dearly loved and enjoyed for many years.
The Constantine family will always be grateful for the outpouring of love and support from his many friends.
Services will be held Thursday May 25th, 2023 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 217 S. Sage Avenue, Mobile, Al. 36606. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM in the Sarto Center, followed by the Eulogy at 11:00 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30 AM. Private Burial will be in Pine Crest West Cemetery, Mobile, Al. Pallbearers: Hayden E. Constantine, Robert L. Constantine, IV, Patrick H. Dunn, Jr., Edward H. Inge, William B. Inge and Andrew J. Zimlich, III. Honorary pallbearers: Walter D.W. Burroughs, David Patrick Constantine, Jr., Edward E. Fields, Jr., Jason G. Halbert, Justin M. Panza and Cecil O. Tucker.
