Phyllis Ray Lowry Bryant Galloway passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on July 7, 2022. A native of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, she was a long time resident of Mobile, Alabama and member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Phyllis Ray was predeceased in death by her loving husband Howard Harrell (Hal) Galloway, her parents Ireland and Allie Howell Bryant, and her sister Mary Kennedy Littleton. She is survived by her brother Oliver Howell Bryant, sister LouAnn Bryant, and children Suzy Bartoli (Steve), Bryant Whelan (Patrick), Mary Beth Cannon (Richard), and Howie Galloway (Stacy). “Ray” will be missed by her grandchildren Matt Bartoli, Alan Bartoli (Mary Kate), Laura Tanner Chappelear (Adam), Mary Frances Joseph (Craig), Katie Cannon, Allie Cannon Baker (Josh), Taylor Galloway Penter (Blake), Tripp Galloway, and four great-grandchildren.
While Mom pre-wrote her simple obituary, as her children we’d like to share a little more about her. Raised in Kentucky, Mom loved playing in the family hardware store and riding horses on the Bryant family farm. The “Pig Skin Prom Queen” at Mt. Sterling High School chose to attend Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans where she met the love of her life, Hal Galloway. They married, lived in the Philippines while Dad was in the Air Force, and started a family while he attended Law School at The University of Alabama.
Mom raised the four of us in Mobile, which she grew to call home, but still adored taking us “up home” to the family homestead in Kentucky. Mom served her community, her church and many charities. She excelled in golf, tennis, flower arranging, fishing and bridge. She and Daddy had many friends and loved to travel, but Mom was also a “sailing widow” as she supported her husband’s sailing passion while hardly an enthusiastic participant. We know Mom is up in heaven with Daddy now where he is giving her big hugs and kisses and hoping just maybe he can talk her into sailing off in to the sunset with him.
We wish to thank Frances Cunningham and Company for their months of care and companionship, and the gentle staff at Saad’s Retreat Hospice for their exceptional care for Mom in her final days.
The family will receive friends at the visitation to be held on Friday, July 15 at 11am in the Parish Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, followed by a memorial service at Noon in the Little Church at St. Paul’s on Old Shell Road. Phyllis Ray requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to St. Paul’s Church, Wilmer Hall, Wheel-a-Meal or the charity of your choice.
