Phyllis Brown Feibelman passed away on July 20th, 2023, at the age of 88. A fourth-generation Mobilian, Phyllis attended Old Shell Road School for her elementary years, then graduated from Murphy High School in 1952. She received an Associate of Arts degree from Stephens College in 1954, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Newcomb College in 1956, and in 1958, a Master of Arts in Education from Bryn Mawr College.
Although Phyllis never joined the traditional workforce, she put those degrees to good use through community involvement and served on countless local and national organization boards. A few highlights include serving as the past President of the Springhill Avenue Temple, the past president of the Mobile Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, and as the chair of the Mobile County Department of Human Resources’ Board of Directors. In addition, she served on Boards for the Mobile Public Library, the Girl Scouts of the Deep South Council, the International Parent Section of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf, the McGill-Toolen PTA, the Mobile Health Association, L’Arche Mobile, the Contact Mobile/ Deaf Contact, and Parents as First Teachers.
Her love of “little people”, the affectionate name she used for children, and her own deaf son contributed to her (and her husband’s) involvement in founding the Mobile Pre-School for the Sensory Impaired. Every year for 34 years, Phyllis hosted the school and its friends for a much-anticipated Easter Egg Hunt in her backyard.
Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband of 24 years, Herbert P. Feibelman, Jr. in 1983, and her son, Herbert P. Feibelman III in 1976.
She is survived by her two sons, Samuel F. Feibelman (Claris Lynn), Phillip L. Feibelman (Robin), and her beloved grandchildren: Claris Leigh Perkins (Woodie), Emily Kate Deptola (Doug), Samuel Feibelman, Jr (Liz), and Jennifer Lyn Feibelman. She has one great-grandchild, Henry James Perkins, and another arriving in October of this year. In addition, she is survived by her brother Milton Brown (Margaret) and sister Lynn Brown Robinson, along with nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the graveside services on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at 10:30 AM at the Springhill Avenue Temple Cemetery on Owens Street, Mobile. Reception to follow at Springhill Avenue Temple on 1769 Spring Hill Avenue, Mobile.
