Philip Nicholas Steadman, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, passed away peacefully at age 73 on February 12, 2024. Philip was born to the late Charles Benson and Claire Voivedich Steadman in Mobile, AL. He was one of 11 children, graduated from McGill Institute in 1968, and was the first one in his family to attend college, graduating from the University of South Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in 1973.
He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, John Anthony Steadman. He is survived by his devoted wife Margaret (Peggy) Steadman of 49 years, daughters Kim Steadman Savage (Denny), Theresa Steadman Jones (Brian) and Laura Steadman Rayza (Mochamad); his six grandchildren: Ethan, Max, Ben, Olivia, Graham and Oliver; as well as siblings: Mary Seelhorst, Lee Faggard, Charles (Gail), Gene (Nick) Nichols, Kathy Swindle, Finny (Joyce), Patty (Phil) Bates, Sue (Joe) Sweeney, Joe (Linda) Steadman.
Philip retired from K-Mart Corporation with 35 years of service, but being retired and idle wasn’t for him. He went to work for Alabama Orthopedic Clinic, where he remained for the last 15 years. However, he didn’t consider it work because he never met a stranger and charmed his co-workers and patients with hilarious stories, pictures of his grandkids and an endless supply of Luden’s cherry cough drops.
It’s hard to pick just one thing that Philip was known for: his quick wit, his one-liners, his quotable stories, his infectious laugh, his work ethic, his kindness. He truly loved life and made everything so fun. He represented the best in all of us.
Philip showed everyone around him that hard work and perseverance really do pay off and that sharing your dreams and accomplishments with the people you love most makes it even more special. There are no words to express how much we will miss him.
Visitation will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Semmes, AL, at 10 AM, on Monday, February 19, 2024. Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11 AM with interment at Pinecrest West Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Philip’s memory to Children’s Hospital of Alabama (1600 7th Ave South, Birmingham, AL 35233).
