Mrs. Norma Oxner - a native of Leakesville, MS, a resident of Mobile for over 50 years, most recently of Chicago, IL, passed away on July 10 at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Oxner, both longtime associates with the Assemblies of God. She and her husband founded numerous congregations across the southeast. While Woodrow served both in the United States and abroad, Norma was known more locally for her music and her abilities to nurture others. A product of Pentecost, she was a gifted vocalist in Southern Gospel music with a love of Bill Gaither’s music. She was talented as both an organist and pianist which reflected the styles of Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Lee Lewis and others from that era. The last church served by the couple was in Lexington, North Carolina. Shortly after their arrival in 1972, First Assembly of God soon outgrew its small facility, launching a campaign to purchase acreage in 1976. By 1979, they had completed a new state of the art sanctuary, debt free, which still prospers to this day. Both are known in that community for their leadership in a city wide movement among churches of multiple denominations, nurtured by Norma’s ability as a worship leader and her sensitivity to the spiritual needs of others. Mrs. Oxner is survived by her daughter, Shelby J. Godbey of Chicago, IL and son, Sheldon R. (Mary Anne) Oxner of Overland Park, KS, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, July 20, 2012, from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Saturday, July 21 at 9:00 A.M. at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street.
