Mary Evelyn Smith, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. Mary was born to Alvin Gordon Long and Mary Evelyn Lewis on June 8, 1934 in Point Clear, Alabama. She was a devout Christian, and spent much loved time studying her bible and reading daily devotionals. Mary also loved her Sunday School Class, and spent many years as a member at Spring Hill Baptist Church. She loved watching and feeding her birds, embroidery, Alabama football, old Westerns, and visitors – she was never one to shy away from company. Mary loved everyone she came across. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be greatly missed.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Edward D. Smith, Sr.; parents; one brother, Alvin Gordon Long, Jr.; two sisters, Imajean Whately and Etta Senn; and one son-in-law, Tommy Childers.
She is survived by her children; Darlene Childers, Edward Smith, Jr. (Lyn) and Vicki Spence (Kurt); eight-grandchildren: Angela (Michael), Christi (Chris), Nikki, Rachael (Cole), J.T., Amanda (Chance), Haley (Justin), and Whitney (Allen); eleven great-grandchildren: Mary, Ryleigh, Lainey, Leighton, Bryson, Wyatt, Avery, Maddie, Brooklyn, Bennett, Emalie, and one on the way – Ellie; as well as a host of other cherished family and friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Spring Hill Baptist Church Foundation.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will be acting as pallbearers.
