Marion Pettiss Warren passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 30th, 2023 at the age of 74. She was “Sugar” to her family and friends and “Yaya” to her beloved grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jefferis Moore Pettiss and Marion Ross Pettiss; and her brother Jefferis Moore Pettiss, Jr.
Sugar is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Dr. T. Malcolm Warren, and their three children; Thomas Malcolm Warren Jr. (Laura), Jamie Warren Horn (John), Marion Warren Randall (Mike); her grandchildren, Emily Rose Horn, Molly Jane Horn, Thomas Malcolm Warren III, Elizabeth Gresham Warren, Michael Warren Randall, Marion “Millie” Ruth Randall, her one sister Lane Pettiss Carleton and many loved nieces, nephews, and relatives.
Sugar was born September 7th, 1949 in Mobile, AL where she would spend the majority of her life. At the age of thirteen, Sugar had her first date with her “husband to be”, which marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment. Sugar and Malcolm married in March of 1968, and they were blessed to have 55 loving years together. She was a champion for children, whether by serving on the Mobile County Board of Education from 1988 to 1994, instilling true southern etiquette in the teenagers who visited her home, or fostering their spiritual life through her active involvement with Young Life Mobile.
Her favorite pastimes were reading with her grandchildren, laughing and sharing old stories with her family and friends, spending summers on the Mobile Bay at the “du Mont Hilton”, playing card games, dancing the jitterbug anywhere she could, and keeping up with her bracket during March Madness. She liked things simple and straightforward. “Plain spoken honesty was all she asked. If she didn’t get it, she’d cut those brown eyes your way and silently mumble a prayer for you.”
Thank you for loving our Sugah Boogah, Yaya, Mom, and Sugar so much. She was one in a million and will be missed.
