Dr. Larry E. Holmes, professor Emeritus of History at the University of South Alabama, passed away November 30th, 2022 in Kirov, Russia. He was 80 years old.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent his childhood in Kansas. He received his PhD in History with a focus on Imperial Russia and the U.S.S.R from the University of Kansas.
He spent his teaching career at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. where he was professor of Western Civilization, Soviet and Russian History. Dr. Holmes has published several books on Russian education and one on the Russian football club, Dynamo, located in Kirov.
Dr. Holmes was a passionate civil rights advocate, sports enthusiast and animal rights defender. He was an ardent supporter of the Animal Rescue Foundation in Mobile and adopted many stray dogs.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Mabel Holmes, his sisters, Lois Rankin and Esther Kay Holmes, and his son, Bobby. He is survived by his wife Marsha Hobbs, brother Keith Holmes (Sue), son Dmitriy Zakharov, daughter Heather Alonso, son-in-law Jamie Alonso, and grandchildren Aquiles, Alicia, and Carmen Alonso.
Dr. Holmes passed away doing what he loved, researching material for a new book.
