She was born to Dulce Schrock and John (Jack) Hunter on March 20, 1939 in Dearborn, MI. Joyce graduated from Saint Frances Xavier High School and went on to become a flight attendant for Capital Airlines. At the time, it was unheard of and frowned upon for a young woman to leave and travel the world alone but that didn’t stop her. She went on to get married and had to end her stewardess career because it was forbidden to be a married stewardess. She was the first woman in the PanAmerican Airlines system worldwide to work in the cargo area. She pioneered her way through the airlines and paved the way for women everywhere to work in traditionally male-dominated roles. She then ended her airline career at PanAm and moved to Dauphin Island, AL in 1992. Joyce started a new career at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab where she worked faithfully and proudly for 10 years.
She is survived by her children Michael (Lori) Turinsky, Mary Beth (Patrick) Shearer, Annie (Brian Duncan) Turinsky-Hayes. She also was Grandma to Phillip (Amanda) Turinsky, Eric (Becky Spradlin), Brianna (Jack) Campo, Brandon Hayes, Nick (Ryan Poniedzielski) Turinsky, Lucy Shearer, Jack Shearer, Molly Shearer and Maggie Shearer. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Logan, Knox and Asher.
Joyce is preceded in death by her son Phillip, her parents and her siblings, Fred (Theresa) Hunter and Barb (Nicholas) Lasacco.
She was an extremely talented seamstress. She sewed all of her grandchildren’s first communion dresses and suits and wedding dresses of friends. She passed her love and dedication of sewing to many of her friends and family over the course of her lifetime. Joyce beamed with pride when she spoke of Dauphin Island and the people she loved there. Her favorite days were spent with her closest Island friends (Jennifer, Sally, Vivian and Mike and Connie). She leaves behind a legacy of generosity and love.
A memorial mass will be held in honor of Joyce with the date to be determined.
Grandma
Because You Have Lived.
To laugh often and much.
To win the respect of intelligent people,
and the affection of children.
To earn the appreciation of honest critics.
To appreciate beauty.
To find the best in others.
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
or a garden patch.
To know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.
This is to know you have succeeded.
