Joseph Bernard Miller, M.D. – a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, AL died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in a local health care facility. Dr. Miller attended Spring Hill College, the University of Alabama Medical School, and Louisiana State University Medical School. He served as Captain of the Medical Corps in the U. S. Army from 1946 until 1948 and entered private practice July 1950 in Pediatrics, Pediatric Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. He served as a consultant to the Department of Pediatrics at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, was a former Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, AL, and a research associate at Spring Hill College. Dr. Miller discovered “Alevaire”, a drug used for respiratory therapy. Mayor Henry Luscher officially designated Tuesday, November 24, 1953 as Dr. Joseph B. Miller Day in Mobile for his respiratory achievements. Dr. Miller was the author of 52 publications including 3 books, 8 chapters in medical books, and 41 papers on original research. His three books were: “Food Allergy: Provocative Testing and Injection Therapy”; “Relief at Last! Neutralization for Food allergy and Other Illnesses”; and “A Doctor! Who…Me???”. Dr. Miller was granted five patents on new medications and medical instruments. He was awarded a Karate Black Belt in Shotokan Karate by T. Mikami of the Japan Karate Association, presented a medal for Excellence in Teaching by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, presented the Jonathan Forman Award as a leader, researcher, and teacher by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine in 2008, and was presented the Ignatian Award for outstanding community service by Spring Hill College in 2009. He was preceded in death by his loving and beautiful wife of 65 years, Annice Miller. He is survived by four children, Joan Miller (Gordon) McCracken, Paige (Alain) Becquet, Bruce Steven Miller, and Carol Miller; three grandchildren, Michael Hoffman, Dennybeth “Punkin”, and Brigitte Jaclyn Becquet; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Spring Hill Avenue Temple. Interment will be in the Spring Hill Avenue Temple Cemetery.
