Joseph Barton Greer, Jr, a native of Mobile, Alabama, passed away on July 13, 2018. He was born on October 14, 1925. He graduated from Murphy High School and attended the University of Alabama where he played football in 1943. Barton “Bartee” served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Fort Worth, Texas as a medic working with the war victims as they returned to the United States. He worked with the family business, Autry Greer & Sons, for over 60 years, retiring as its Chairman of the Board. Bartee’s hobbies were golf, football, and flying. One of his greatest accomplishments was building his own airplane in his garage that he flew all around the Mobile area as well as to Oshkosh, Wisconsin several times. His airplane now resides in the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Alabama. Bartee loved his family and friends. He also loved helping those less fortunate and giving back to the community. He served on many community boards and was a dedicated Rotarian where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and Major Donor.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Barton Greer, Sr. and Dorothy Dodge Greer, his sisters Dorothy Eugenia Greer Radcliff and Helen Sibley Greer Mooney and his high school sweetheart who he was married to for more than 50 years, Betty Bell Greer.
He is survived by his wife Louise White-Spunner Greer, his brother Jack Vidmer Greer, Sr. (Janice) and his four children, Rebecca Greer Myers (Tom), Joseph Barton Greer III (Paula), Augustus Leslie Greer (Laura), and Robert Albright Greer (Kathleen), as well as 13 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, July 16, 2018 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street. Services will be at 11:00.
