Joseph Thomas Croom, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Friday, June 23, 2017. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Springhill Presbyterian Church of Mobile, AL at 11:00am with a reception following. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vilma Johnston Croom, his parents James A. and Ella P. Croom, sisters Gertrude, Laura, Nettie Mae, and Ernestine, and one brother, James.
Joe was born August 18, 1924 in the community of Rocky Creek located in George County, MS. His boyhood was filled with the love of the land, fishing and caring for his family along with fellow neighbors. His fascination with flying was augmented by crop-dusting the family farm.
Joe served his country during WWII in the US Navy as an aviator. He spent his enlisted years as a pilot instructor at Corey and Whiting Fields, Pensacola, FL. After the war, he continued to fly in the Naval Reserves and became the corporate pilot for International Paper Company. He logged over 10,000 flight hours in his aviation career. Subsequently, he retired from International Paper Company after working 28 years in the Woodlands Division.
Joe was a lifelong member of Springhill Presbyterian Church serving in various capacities. His love and strong faith in Jesus Christ was apparent in all relationships with his family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Dewan Croom (Jeanne), John Kerry Croom (Carol), four grandchildren, Michael (Angela), John (Hallie), Kerry (Lizzie), and Kitty, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
