John Conrad Wacker, III “Joe”, 83 and lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2024. He was born on May 15, 1941 to John C. Wacker, Jr. “Jack” and Ruth Holcombe Wacker. Joe attended Little Flower Catholic School, and was a member of the 1959 graduating class of McGill Institute. After high school, he served briefly with the United States Coast Guard before receiving a medical discharge. Joe then spent 13 years working for the Alabama Highway Department as an engineer, before starting his own construction company. He retired as the Director of the Physical Plant and Equipment for the Mobile County Board of Health.
Joe married the love of his life, Lucile Laurendine Wacker, on November 28, 1964. They were parishioners of St. Philip Neri for over 50 years, before relocating and becoming parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes. Joe still attended mass at St. Philip at times to fellowship with friends. He had grown up on Mobile Bay, and greatly enjoyed racing sailboats. He was a member of the Mobile Yacht Club since he was a teenager, and later achieved the status of Lifetime Member of Buccaneer Yacht Club. Joe loved traveling the Gulf Coast, racing. He enjoyed engineering, and had a talent for designing and building anything from boats to furniture. In his later years, Joe grew very interested in genealogy, family and local history – he even traveled to Germany to visit the hometown of the originating Wacker in his family line. He was a member of the Mensa Society, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Confederacy, and Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Anne Stewart McMillan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lucile Laurendine Wacker; daughter, Michael Anne Daigle; sons, John Gregory (Mary Claire) Wacker, James Gaston (Sondra Grace) Wacker, and Samual Joseph Wacker; two sisters, Mary Suzanne “Suzie” Mason and Shannon Marie “Jolly” Wacker; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other cherished family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mobile.
Visitation for Joe will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 starting at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church located at 1621 Boykin Boulevard, Mobile, Alabama 36605, with a Celebration of Life Mass beginning at 11 a.m.
