John Carroll O’Neill, Jr., known affectionately as “Stump” by family and friends was born on February 2, 1929 and departed this life on May 31, 2019. A devoted husband and father, Stump is survived by his wife, Jean Frances Murray O’Neill of 63 years, and their daughters – Appie O’Neill Head (Jeff), Jean O’Neill Downing (Royer), Elizabeth O’Neill Stone (Norborne), Kathleen Murray O’Neill and Carroll O’Neill Broom (Kent); 12 grandchildren- Appie Head McMurphy (Steadman), Jack Head (Megan), Hannah Stone Noonan (Campbell), Gregory Stone, Kathleen Stone, Rachel Downing, Royer Downing, Alec Parliament, Michael Parliament, Blakely Broom, Taylor Broom and Kendall Broom ; 3 great grandchildren- Appie, Perry, and Lanier McMurphy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Margaret Vickers O’Neill and John Carroll O’Neill, Sr and sister, Helen O’Neill Meador (Bobby). He is survived by one brother, Richard Stewart O’Neill and numerous nieces and nephews. After attending Murphy High School, Stump graduated from McCallie High School in Tennessee. He studied at Springhill College, then graduated from The University of Alabama. Stump served during the Korean War in the United States Army, and then settled in Mobile to become a successful and respected Commercial Realtor and Developer. Stump enjoyed every aspect of life to the fullest, never missing the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Whether on Mobile Bay or Dauphin Island, Stump was happy with a fishing pole in hand, sailing or even enjoying sunsets. A member of numerous mystic societies, Stump could often be found throwing moon pies from a float in a parade or cutting a rug on the dance floor. A true Irishman, he was a founding member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He and Jean shared a love of travel both in the United States and abroad. A devout Catholic, Stump was a life-long, active member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
His family is forever grateful for the kindness and devotion shown by his extraordinary caregivers. Visitation will be June 4, 2019 from 10:30 to 11:30 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with funeral Mass immediately following in the church.
