Joan Frances Callahan Fitzgerald passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022, in Mobile, Alabama at the age of 93. She was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on September 14, 1929, to Maurice L. Callahan and Lillian A. Lawless Callahan. Joan was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. She lived in Pittsfield, Massachusetts where she met the love of her life, William James “Bill” Fitzgerald to whom she was married for over 50 years. She followed the career of her husband that relocated them to Mobile, Alabama in 1963.
Joan was a devoted parishioner of St. Dominic Catholic Church for over 40 years. She was employed with Sears until her retirement at which time she began her volunteer work at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama as a Pink Lady. Joan loved having family gatherings, celebrating Christmas and “Beach Week” in Fort Morgan, Alabama.
Joan was the proud mother of Karen (Larry) Abreo of Mobile, Alabama, Dennis Fitzgerald of Mobile, Alabama, Judith “Judi” (Taylor) Black of Mobile, Alabama and Mark (Dayna) Fitzgerald of Mandeville, Louisiana. She is survived by her grandchildren Jennifer Abreo, Kathryn Sasser, Elizabeth Fitzgerald Johnson, Amanda Fitzgerald, Rebecca Seitz, T.J. Black, Dale Roberts, Clint Roberts, D.J. Alphonso and Travis Fitzgerald. She is also the great grandmother of 16 who lovingly called her “Nana”. She will also be missed by a host of nieces and nephews. Joan is preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Fitzgerald, her parents and her brother, William Callahan.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Visitation to be held on Friday, December 2, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in the Murphy Center at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 4156 Burma Road, Mobile, AL 36693. A Mass of Christian Burial will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery West, 1599 Snow Road, Mobile, Alabama 36695.
