Janie Louise Black Roberts died March 29, 2021 at home peacefully, with loving family at her side. She was born December 15, 1923 in Albertville, Alabama and was the daughter of Reverend William H. Black and Louise Patterson Black.
Jane grew up in Monroeville, Alabama and was a graduate of Monroe County High School. She then attended and graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. After moving to Mobile she worked for the Juvenile Court and later was a teacher in the Mobile County Public School System.
On April 28, 1951, she married the love of her life, August Porter Roberts, Jr. Their 67-year marriage was a model of undying love and devotion to each other. Together they raised three children, William Porter, David August, and Martha Louise.
To know Jane Roberts was to also know of her devotion and commitment to the church. First the Spring Hill Avenue Baptist Church, where her father, Reverend W. H. Black was the pastor, and then the First Baptist Church of Mobile, where she remained a faithful member until her death. Active in every area of the church, she touched countless lives through her many years of service. But her devotion and love for her family was truly unmatched. Without exception she considered every member of her family to be priceless and each one forever bears the mark of her love.
She is survived by her sons William P. (Sandy) and David A., both of Mobile, grandchildren Sarah Hilscher (Nick), Mark Roberts (Kristen), Lindsey Coker (Dennis), Jeffrey Elrod, Justin Litaker, Candace Headland (Anthony), Cole Litaker (Rachael), Craig Kaczmarek, fourteen great-grandchildren, four nieces and nephews, and countless other relatives and friends.
A special debt of gratitude is owed to Andrea McCovey, Debra Wilson, Sue Bruno, and LaSonya Williams who provided Jane with loving care during the past several years. They will forever be part of the Roberts family. Deep appreciation is also owed to the loving staff of SAAD Hospice, whose care and service allowed Jane to remain in the home she loved.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Mobile, 806 Government Street on Saturday April 3rd at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Mobile or the W. H. Black Memorial at the University of Mobile Library.
