Benny, known for his kindness and concern for social justice, was a talented musician and a loving family man. He was always there to help others in need.
He is survived by his wife Valerie, children Joshua and Jessica, siblings Mickey, Teresa, Bonnie, sister-in-law Vicki, brother-in-law Allen, and several nieces and nephews. Benny was preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Emma Nell, and siblings Freddie, Alan, and Elaine.
Benny served in the US Navy for 4 years and had a successful career spanning 27 years on the Mobile Fire Department, as well as working as a tax preparer at H&R Block. In his free time, he dedicated himself to various community activities, including the Kairos Prison Ministry, Alabama Presbyterian Cursillo, Central Presbyterian Food Kitchen, and the Semmes Senior Center. Benny also had a passion for music, writing lyrics and performing original songs on guitar, with his best friend Tony. While he enjoyed exploring international destinations, he was always eager to return home. He adored his two cats, Nermal & Snickerdoodle.
Visitation will be held on April 20, 2024, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, with a service following at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. A graveside committal ceremony will take place thereafter at Springhill Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Disabled American Veterans. Radney Funeral Home in Mobile, AL, is assisting with the arrangements.
