James Elliott Broughton, 77, long-time resident of Mobile (he considered himself a native) passed away Monday, March 14, 2022, following an extended illness. He was born February 20, 1945, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
After graduating from McGill Institute, Class of ’63 and Spring Hill College, Class of ’67, Jim attended the University of Alabama. Following graduate school, he served in Korea with the United States Army. Upon his return to the U.S., he entered duty with the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Quantico, VA. His first assignment as an FBI Special Agent was in Los Angeles, CA. He left Los Angeles to attend the Defense Language Institute of Monterey, CA where he became fluent in Arabic. Jim then returned to the East coast as a specialist in counter-intelligence at the FBI office in New York City. The following year, he was assigned to a supervisory position at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. After several years at Headquarters, he returned to his Gulf Coast roots with a transfer to the New Orleans FBI office and later to the Mobile office. After a dedicated and storied career, Jim retired from the FBI in 1997.
In retirement, Jim found joy in tending to family affairs and loved ones. He loved spending time with friends, old and new. He cherished his time at the family hunting camp in Letohatchee, AL, quiet days on the wharf at Mullet Point, and afternoons with Lilly and Elizabeth, whom he adored.
Jim is preceded in death by his father, Rollin Carter Broughton, Sr.; mother, Eileen Scanlon Broughton; and brother, Rollin Carter Broughton, Jr.
Jim is survived by his beloved, Francine; her daughter, Patty McIntosh Howell (David); their daughters, Lilly and Elizabeth; his brother, Dr. Jet Broughton (DiGi); sisters, Mary Broughton McLendon, and Annette Broughton Robinson (Paul); cousin, Clara Ann Brunk; and many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
A visitation for Jim will be held at 10:00-11:30 on Monday, March 21, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1453 Old Shell Rd, Mobile, AL 36604, with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL 36605.
In lieu flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc. 3717 Fettler Park Drive, Dumfries, VA 22025.
