Herman O. Tanner, 71, a life-long resident of Wilmer, Alabama, passed away at his home Thursday, May, 31, 2018. Mr. Tanner proudly served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division in Dong Tam, Vietnam. His immediate and courageous actions were responsible for relieving pressure on the pinned-down squad and allowed completion of the mission earning him the Army’s Silver Star for gallantry in action.
Mr. Tanner has owned Mary’s Restaurant and Lounge on Lott Rd. for the past 20 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alene Boyd; first wife, Janice Vickers Tanner; son, Rodney Stephen Tanner; and sister, Ellen Schmitz.
Mr. Tanner is survived by wife, Mary Tanner; son, Justin (Sarah) Tanner; grandchildren, Taylor Tanner, Victoria Tanner, Stephen Tanner, Rodney D. Tanner, Herman Clay Tanner, and Gavin Tanner; sister, Bobbie Bryant; as well as numerous other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 4, 2018 from the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St. Mobile, AL 36606, at 2:00 PM. The family will be accepting friends at the funeral home on Monday from 12:00 noon until service time. Interment will immediately follow at Wilmer Cemetery.
