George W. Williams (Sonny to his wife and cousins), longtime resident of Mobile, AL, passed away at the age of 80 on August 16, 2023. He worked hard after a spinal cord injury but succumbed to heart and kidney failure. He is preceded in death by his father George W. "Dutch" Williams, Sr. and mother Barbara Fillingin Williams. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Kathy Williams, daughter Christine Gilson and sons, Michael Williams and Jaret Williams. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George attended school in Mobile, graduated from Murphy High School in 1962 and earned a BS degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement. He continued his education and earned certificates in areas of management and law enforcement.
He served the citizens of Mobile as a policeman, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant in 1995 and two weeks later was appointed as Director of 911. This job challenged and frustrated him more than being a policeman. He was very proud of what he accomplished at 911 and for his hard work he was honored by the county with a Resolution lauding his hard work and received a Special Proclamation from Mayor Sam Jones and the City Council of Mobile proclaiming April 29, 2013 as George Williams Day.
George served his country honorably in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1967.
He was very straightforward and honest and still believed a man's word was his bond and a handshake was a contract.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home-Mobile on Sunday, August 20, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel officiated by Pastor Tim Cauley.
He will be greatly missed.
