George Morgan Slade – son of the late James Bennett and Theresa Llabona Roberts Slade, died at his home on Friday, October 17, 2014 . He was born on September 9, 1931, in Mobile at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Morgan at 1919 Government Street. They were friends of his mother.
The first six years of his life were spent at home in Washington County, Alabama at their home place, Ravenwood. He later attended school in Mobile at Raphael Semmes and St. Mary's Elementary School before attending and graduating from Saint Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS. He then attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, graduating in 1953 with a degree in agriculture. While there, Mr. Slade was a member of the Air Force ROTC and the Arnold Air Society.
After graduating, Mr. Slade entered the U.S. Air Force and served at Spence Air Base in Moultrie, Georgia, Lackland AFB in Texas, and Elmendorf AFB in Alaska. He left active duty on October 28, 1955, as a 1st Lieutenant. Upon returning to Mobile, he opened Slade's Laundromat in three locations and operated the business for 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and duplicate bridge as his pastimes.
Mr. Slade was preceded in death by his brother, James Bennett Slade, Sr., and sisters, Louise Urania Slade Ashley, Virginia Cecile Slade Inge, Marie Alleen Slade Thompson, Claudia Harrell Slade Lindsey, Frances Sanderson Slade Pierson, and Helen Roberts Kelly. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Henrietta Oliver Slade; daughter, Linda Elizabeth Slade; sons, Robert Morgan Slade and his wife Rebecca Sewell Slade, and James Bennett Slade IV and his wife Lawana Zeigler Slade; grandchildren, Daniel Morgan Slade, Christian Nicholas Slade, Robert Taylor Slade, James Anthony "Tony" Slade, James Bennett Slade V, Lauren Elizabeth Slade, Victoria Elizabeth Slade, and Isabella Grace Slade; many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Friday, October 24, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Holy Family Catholic Church on Saturday, October 25, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Hooks-Harris Cemetery in Washington County on Highway 43 north of McIntosh, AL at 12 :15 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel Morgan Slade, Christian Nicholas Slade, Robert Taylor Slade, James Anthony "Tony" Slade, John Bennett Pierson, and Herbert Douglas.
