Frank W. Barter passed peacefully at his home on February 12, 2015. He was born March 8, 1922, in Mobile, AL, and lived in Mobile his entire life. He never wanted to live anywhere else. This was his home and he loved it. As a young boy he had a paper route and threw the morning paper with his best friend and brother, Joe Barter. As a child he attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and later McGill Institute, graduating in 1940. Being affiliated with McGill Institute and a founding member of Saint Pius X Catholic Church were the proudest and best times of his life and he would be quick to tell you. He was also a fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus and a Knight of Saint Gregory. Even before attending McGill, Frank was involved supporting the family. He was a carrier for the Mobile Times and became a solicitor. Responding to the call of duty, he enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War II and was part of the 11th Air Division as a paratrooper. Returning from the war he worked in the circulation department of the Press Register and was later promoted to Advertising Manager. In 1954, he was appointed Circulation Manager; he worked at the Press Register for over forty years. After leaving Mobile Press Register, he worked at the Archdiocese of Mobile in real estate management for nearly twenty years. Mr. Barter served in various organizations such as the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Mobile Chamber of Commerce, the Allen Memorial, the Exchange Club and a Mobile Mystic Society. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Barter, his wife, “Bunny” Barter, sisters, Mary Louise Collier and Theresa Augusta Bullock and brothers, Joseph Percy Barter and Percy George Barter. He is leaving behind one daughter, Mary Anne Ferguson, son-in-law, Andrew, whom he loved like a son and two grandchildren, Kathryn Marie and Patrick Ferguson. In addition, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Ms. Debra (Curtis) Hulett his primary caregiver who provided him with continued quality of life even as he became more housebound and declined in health. We would also like to thank his other caregivers, Jane Lyon, Charlotte Howard, Diane Evans, Donna Polite and Liz Hess. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at Radney Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Little Flower Catholic Church on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Catholic Cemetery.
