Sunday, March 5, 2017. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, Ethel was a lifelong resident
of Mobile. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend to many.
Ethel attended Spring Hill College and graduated in the second class that included
women with a degree in Education. She was the first lay teacher at Convent of Mercy
High School. She was a founding member of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in
Gulf Shores and a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Mobile. A devout
Christian, Ethel was dedicated to her faith, family, friends, and service to others. She
served on The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta Council and awarded The
Metropolis Archangel Michael Medal for service to her parish. Ethel was a member of
The Philoptochos Society, Daughters of Penelope, a co-founder of the original board of
Penelope House, and chairperson of The Clay Foundation. Ethel was also involved in
their family business, Korbet’s Restaurant.Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Katie and George Kordomenos; her brother,
Nicholas “Sonny” Kordomenos, and her precious daughter, Chrisanthy Catranis
Sperantsas. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Nicholas Catranis; sons
Dr. Theodore Catranis (Connie), George Catranis (Anna); grandchildren, Nicholas
Catranis, Constantine Catranis, Elizabeth Catranis, Ellie Ana Sperantsas, and many other
family members and dear friends.
The family will receive friends at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Gulf Shores
on Wednesday, March 8, 6-8 p.m. with Trisagion Service at 7 p.m. and again at Radney
Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St., on Thursday, March 9, 6-8 p.m. with Trisagion Service
at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Mobile
on Friday, March 10, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery.
