The Reverend Ernest R. Hyndman, a priest of the Archdiocese of Mobile who served as Pastor of St. Agatha Parish, Bay Minette, died on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. Father Ernie Hyndman was born on August 15, 1964 at St. Clair Shores, Michigan. The family soon moved to Mobile where Father Ernie attended both St. Dominic Parish School and McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spring Hill College in 1986 and was hired by The Catholic Week as typographer and later served as editor. In 1990 he answered the call to priesthood and entered seminary at St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, Louisiana. He went on to study theology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, where in addition to earning a Master of Divinity degree, he fully embraced the Cajun culture and developed a love of LSU football. Father Ernie was ordained to the Priesthood on May 18, 1996 at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile. Father Ernie first served as parochial vicar at Holy Family Parish, Mobile and in 1998 was appointed as the parish administrator. Later that year, he was appointed Pastor of St. Agatha Parish, Bay Minette and St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Atmore, where he also became chaplain to their Knights of Columbus council. In 1999 he returned to Holy Family Parish, Mobile as pastor. Father Ernie also served on the Board of Directors of his alma mater, McGill-Toolen Catholic High School from 2003-2008. In 2005 he was appointed pastor of St. Dominic Parish, Mobile. After a medical leave of absence in 2006, Father Ernie was appointed Pastor once again at St. Agatha Parish, Bay Minette. In 2008 he also took on the responsibility of State Chaplain to the Alabama Knights of Columbus. Father Ernie was preceded in death by his father, Ernest R. Hyndman, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Gloria Hyndman, his sister and brother-in-law, Katrina and Anthony Bartlett, with niece and nephew, Christine and Andrew; his stepmother, Mrs. Marianna R. Hyndman; and two uncles, Edward A. Hyndman (Janet) and Robert Moutz (Virginia).
Rosary and the Office of the Dead for deceased priests will be held on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Agatha Catholic Church, 1001 Hand Avenue, Bay Minette, AL. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile. Interment will take place at Catholic Cemetery.
