Elsie Roebuck Austin – born October 18, 1923 in Northport, AL to the late Robert Kent Roebuck and Elsie Reed Roebuck Hudgens, passed away at a local hospital on May 19, 2012. Mrs. Austin received her R.N. degree from Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS in 1943. She worked at Morehouse Hospital in Bastrop, LA, Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, MS, and the old Providence Hospital before finishing her career at U.S.A. Medical Center where she was the head nurse in the Cancer and Orthopedic Units. She was a member of the Retired Nurses Association, a past-president of the Board of the State of Louisiana Downs Syndrome Association, and a member of Government Street Presbyterian Church where she was in the Circle 5. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her husband, Albert D. Austin; step-father, Oliver “PePaw” Hudgens; son-in-law, David Layman; brother, Robert Roebuck; brother-in-law, Lamar Clark; and sisters-in-law, Martha Roebuck and Charlene Hudgens. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Layman and Elizabeth “Beth” Austin; grandchildren, Larry Layman, Jr. (Cindy) and Teresa French (Jim); brother, John Hudgens (Debra); sister, Ann Clark; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Carrington Place in Satsuma and the doctors and nurses at Mobile Infirmary for all of their wonderful love and care. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the service hour. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. Mrs. Austin also leaves the Sisters of Holy Angels her love.
