The elegant and lovely Mrs. John N. Miller, a southern lady who graced Mobile, AL with her presence for nearly 96 years, died from a three day battle with pneumonia on Friday evening the 18th of October 2013. She was born in Columbus, Georgia on January 18, 1918 to Martin Snowden Hare of Andalusia, AL and Mary Lou Larkins of Bristol, FL. Tragically, she and her younger and only brother Curtis Leroy Hare, were orphaned when their dad contracted TB and died when she was but 3 and her mother suffered death in an accidental tragedy when she was 4. She was raised by relatives in Bristol, FL until she could start high school when she moved to Spartanburg, SC to reside with her beloved Aunt Edith Matthews. After high school, she went to Business College in Birmingham, Alabama before finally arriving in Mobile to work for the US Army Corps of Engineers, where she labored from pre-war 1930’s until retirement in the 1970’s. In 1947 she married the ex-Army soldier and local grocer John Nicholas Miller. She grew onward in faith from her Baptist upbringing and became a faith filled Roman Catholic, celebrating her continuing journey through St. Monica’s Church and school where she was an active participant and educated three boys. Late in life she moved to west Mobile and resided in St. Dominic’s parish where she counted many friends. Edna dearly loved her family and regularly gathered the large family tree of sons, daughters –in-laws, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, great grand babies, friends, and strays around her, both at her Cottage Hill area home and especially her beloved beach home in Perdido Key, FL. She leaves behind temporarily many to cherish her memory and has gone to prepare a saintly place for her sons, John, Greg and Terry Miller. She’s joined her husband John and brother Curt who preceded her in death. Her memory will be treasured by nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren as well as a host of drop-in-friends, neighbors and outlaws that reveled in being fed and loved by “Grandma Miller”. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 4156 Burma Road at 11:00 AM with visitation to begin at 10 AM in the church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor or to the St. Mary’s Home for Girls.
