Doris Claire who was affectionately known by her family as Dori, was born in St. Louis, MO on March 17, 1928. She spent her childhood in Collinsville, IL. As a young woman, she went to New York at 17 and worked as a model at Bonwit Teller. After visiting relatives in Mobile, Al, she relocated here in 1947 because it reminded her of the warmth of a smalltown where she grew up. She married Melvin “Buddy” Stein on October 30, 1947. She spent her life raising five children and serving the community that she lived.
She was a member of Ahavas Chesed Synagogue and Springhill Avenue Temple, serving as President. She was a major contributor to Mobile Area Jewish Federation, serving on various committees and Director Emeritus, as well as recipient of the Devorah Award. She was a longtime supporter and volunteer to the United Way of Southwest Alabama serving on numerous committees and Emeritus Trustee. She served as Director of Mobile Area Red Cross., board trustee for Mobile Infirmary, Director of Mobile Community Foundation, Advisory board of the Preschool for the Deaf, Charter Member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, Board trustee for UMS-Wrights.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin “Buddy” Stein, her oldest daughter, Sylvia Newman and her daughter-in-law, Veritha Stein. She is survived by four children, David (Darlene) Stein, Jonathan (Pam) Stein and Emily Miles of Mobile, and Abbe Fass of Greenville,S. C; grandchildren, Michael Stein, Misty (Gary) Connick, Katherine Miles and Reid-Claire Stein of Mobile, Al, Sydney (Brian) Groll of Miami, Fl., Madelyn Fass of Greenville, S.C. and Rebecca Bierman of San Francisco, CA; great grandchildren, Kaylee and Kinley Connick of Mobile and Noah and Lionel Groll of Miami, Fl; and her beloved brother, Les (Sara) Kramer.
Private graveside services will be held in Congregation Ahavas Chesed Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Springhill Avenue Temple Cemetery (located at 1769 Spring Hill Avenue) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017. The family will later hold a minyan at Jonathan and Pam Stein’s House (located at 3770 Claridge Road North) at 5:30 p.m.
