Deborah Louise Thompson, of Mobile Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, the 1st of May, 2024. She was 70. She is survived by her brother George Thompson of Marietta, Georgia (Hilda), niece Kirsten Stephenson of Boca Raton (Sam), nephews Damon Thompson of Dacula, Georgia (Amy) and Clinton Thompson of Birmingham, Alabama (Michelle), cousin Ingrid Carpenter of Mobile, Alabama (Larry) and a great host of grand nieces and nephews.
Born to Ruth (Easterling) and Donald Thompson in Mobile, she went on to study psychology at the University of South Alabama, graduating in the class of 1977, and remained a lifelong fan of the University.
Following her parents to Columbus, Ohio, she later worked as a Business Process Analyst at the Defense Supply Center for the Department of Defense, and was active in her church community. Her Ohio family of friends wanted it known that Debbie was forever faithful, loving, patient, with a quick sense of humor. That she was incredibly generous with her resources and her home, as well as gifted with great insight into God’s Word and she enjoyed debating theology. She was very much a part of their family there and they miss her but will enjoy her presence in heaven.
Upon retirement, she returned to Mobile, Alabama where she was again very active in her church communities, often teaching Sunday School classes. She was an avid volunteer in many capacities, driving people to doctor appointments when they were unable to do so, volunteering at animal shelters, volunteering fourteen years at Providence hospital in the surgical waiting room where they are heartbroken at losing her, and a host of other volunteer activities. She loved and adored her own pets, having enjoyed many throughout her lifetime. She even kept a food dish out for the stray cats in her neighborhood.
She loved reading, attending theatre, and playing cards with her many friends, and especially the burgers at Callaghan’s Irish Social Club. She liked to host her and her friends ‘Our Old Broad’s Card Games,’ and always cheerfully brought great potluck food for Sunday School parties.
More than anything, Deborah loved God. She read and studied the Bible daily. Her friends remember her as a prayer warrior with a gentle spirit. She loved them dearly. At Cottage Hill Baptist Church, her friends remember sharing their last class together, ‘Experiencing God’ which prepared her for her life now with her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.
Deborah was a special light in her community to her family, friends, and neighbors, who add that she was intelligent, loved to read, and deeply knowledgeable about everything. One friend noted that she phoned Debbie if she didn’t understand something about a topic, because Debbie had already read about it. She will be dearly missed.
Funeral arrangements are with Pine Crest funeral home, a service will be held there on Saturday, May 11th 2024 at 11am with visitation at 9 am, and a reception following at Pine Crest Funeral Home and Cemeteries, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway Mobile, Alabama 36605.
