David Wayne McKean, Sr. passed away on January 9, 2024 surrounded by his family. He carried a heavy cross of health complications for 20 years. His family rejoices that his body, mind and spirit are now made whole.
David was born December 7, 1953 in Mobile, Ala., to Louise Bevis and Edmund Walter McKean, Sr. He was the youngest of nine children.
He attended Corpus Christi Catholic School when his family “lived in the country” and St. Mary Catholic School once they “moved to town.” David was a 1971 graduate of McGill Institute, where he was a proud member of the football team.
David graduated from Memphis State University in 1975 and happily cheered on the Memphis Tigers basketball team throughout his life. (Though his true sports love was Auburn football.)
After college, he lived in Tennessee and Kentucky before moving back to Mobile in the early 80s. David spent 25 years as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch, Prudential, JC Bradford and Wachovia. He found great purpose in taking care of his clients in all matters big and small.
David was loud, boisterous and vivacious. He never met a stranger. He loved Mardi Gras parades, Dew Drop Inn hot dogs, snow skiing, Jimmy Buffett and 70s rock, and boating in the Gulf of Mexico. David’s favorite place on earth was Shell Island near Panama City Beach, Fla., where he visited with his family for 50 years. An ardent sports fan, he could frequently be found yelling at his kids’ and grandkids’ youth sporting events or exclaiming “Touchdown, Auburn!”
A lifelong Catholic, David was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, St. Ignatius Catholic Church and most recently Little Flower Catholic Church.
He treasured his family more than anything. David was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren and was always encouraging them to “just put one foot in front of the other” or “you can do anything you set your mind to.”
David is preceded in death by his mother, father, three brothers and his sister. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Peggy, a son David McKean Jr. (Kristina), a daughter Morgan Worley (Stephen) and two bonus sons, Kelly Stringer (Jennifer) and Shane Stringer (Sandy).
His favorite role was being Pops to 10 grandchildren, Ann Louise, Tripp and Samuel McKean, Kate Worley, Lindsey and Chelsey Stringer, Stephen and Jonathan Stringer, Grace and Brooke Samuel, and two great-granddaughters, Penelope and Mia.
David is also survived by a large extended family and his dog, Maggie May.
His family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and caregivers who supported David over the years.
There will be a visitation from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile. A mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 15, at Little Flower Catholic Church in Mobile, followed by a graveside service at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile and then a celebration for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in David’s honor be made to the Katherine and Louise McKean Memorial Scholarship Fund (call 251-461-6237) or Little Flower Catholic Church (littleflowermobile.com). Condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-mobile.com.
