He was the oldest of three children. He was a veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also proudly served in the Alabama National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve, for a total of 25 years military service, retiring in 1969 with the rank of Major. He had a keen sense of humor, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He gained the nickname of “Mater Man” from all the tomatoes he single-handedly raised from seed, planted, pruned and picked. Well into his eighties, he would sit in his truck on the side of Azalea Road and sell the tomatoes to many happy customers, who would wait anxiously for him to return each year.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Mae Geraldine Nobles, and his four children, Larry (Carrie) Nobles, Sonja Kilpatrick, Cheryl (Mike) Busbin, Dale (Ruth) Nobles; eleven grandchildren, Chris (Dana) Nobles, Nicole (Adam) Sparkman, Stephen (Jessica) Nobles, Tara Kilpatrick, Michael Kilpatrick, Clay (Nikki) Kilpatrick, Brad (Annice) Busbin, Brian (Joanie) Busbin, Mandy (Seth) Parker, Ellis Nobles, and Avery Nobles; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Gonzales Nobles, and his mother, Mary Agnes Nobles, his brother and sister, and one great-granddaughter.
