Charles attended Fruitdale High School where he played basketball and baseball and graduated in 1949. He was a Quartermaster Corp Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1949-1952, in which time he served in the Korean War and received four Bronze Stars. He was then employed with Scott Paper Company for 37 years until his retirement in 1989. Charles was also very active in his Masonic and Scottish Rite organizations including Bowen Lodge #240 and Pentalpha Lodge #804. He was a member since 1968 and he was a 33rd Degree.
Charles loved to stay busy and was usually working in his yard or tinkering in his workshop – he could fix anything! He was an avid Alabama Football fan and loved following the Southeastern Conference as a whole.
Charles was an active member of the Gulf Hills Baptist Church and also attended Sunday worship at Moffett Road Baptist Church. Charles had many friends and loved ones and was well-respected by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was very knowledgeable in a vast array of areas and captured the attention of anyone he spoke with. Charles loved his family. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Nola Nowell; and his wife of 33 years, Betty Dunn Hendrix.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Mike Hendrix (Kimberly); daughter, Christine Purvis (David); grandchildren, Charlotte Barbour (Jed), Ethan Hendrix, and Garrett Purvis; great-grandchildren, Lincoln Barbour, and Emmett Barbour; brother, Russell Hendrix; sister, Nora Pierre, and many nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.
A visitation will be held for Charles at Pine Crest Funeral Home 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, Alabama 36605 on Monday, January 17th at 11 AM with funeral service to follow at 1 PM in the chapel. Interment will be at Pine Crest Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.
Charles was a very strong, kind-hearted man and will be greatly missed, leaving a gigantic void in the lives of all who knew him.
