Celeste Hodges Peebles passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2024, surrounded by her family. Celeste was born on July 21, 1944, in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Mobile. She was a graduate of Julius T. Wright School for Girls and Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Celeste is preceded in death by her parents, Catharine Hill Hodges and Thomas Lawrence Hodges, and brother, Thomas Lawrence Hodges, Jr. She is survived by her adoring husband of 58 years, Emory Bush Peebles III, and her three children Emory Bush Peebles IV (Debbie), Catharine Peebles Dukes (John), and Thomas Hill Peebles (Meredith); grandchildren Alexandra Peebles, Win Peebles, Caroline Peebles, Catharine Dukes, Virginia Dukes, Thomas Peebles, John Peebles, and Luke Peebles; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Laura and Schley Rutherford and Allison and John Peebles; nieces Mary Hodges Cole and Lee Adams (Sumner); nephews John Schley Rutherford, John Connor H. Peebles and William B. Peebles and great niece Ally Mund.
Celeste was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose grandchildren affectionately called her CC. One of her favorite hobbies was playing checkers with any of the grandchildren who were brave enough to be her adversary. She loved the outdoors, and two of her favorite spots were Dog River and the mountains of North Carolina. Celeste also loved traveling, gardening, and her Tuesday Lunch Group.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where Celeste was a member for most of her life, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. The family invites you to join them for a reception in the Parish Hall following the service.
