Barbara Gay Renner Doehring – loving wife, mother, daughter and friend, and a 91 year-old native and resident of Mobile and New Orleans, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024. Gay attended Little Flower Catholic School, Leinkauf Elementary School, Barton Academy, and Visitation Convent School.
Afterwards she attended Murphy High school and was a member of Delta Beta Sigma. Gay then attended two years at Alabama College, State College for Women (now known as the University of Montevallo), and graduated from the University of South Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in education.
Reading and teaching were two of her passions. Her friend, Mel Showers, longtime news anchor of WKRG-TV, even popped in and read to Gay’s kindergarten class at Bessie C. Fonville Elementary School.
Gay was a member of Saint Pius X Catholic Church.
Her smile and bright blue eyes were contagious. Gay loved life and lived with passion.
Her other joys were pure devotion and creating fond memories with her three children, swimming, (she was a certified Red Cross safety water instructor), taking trips to Western Ireland to see family and friends, making daily trips to Cammie’s Old Dutch for a chocolate ice cream cone, and organizing backyard Easter egg hunts for her grandchildren.
Until three weeks ago, Gay was still setting personal records at OsteoStrong. She was the oldest OsteoStrong member at three locations in two counties.
Gay was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Charles O’Hearn Mueller Renner and Anna Zorna Aleix Renner; a brother, Michael O’Hearn Renner; her husband, Carl Duncan Doehring; and a daughter, Kathleen Laurie O’Hearn Doehring. She leaves behind a daughter, Elisabeth Ann O’Hearn Doehring; and a son, Richard Eric Doehring, and his wife, Frances Sellers Doehring, as well as four grandchildren, Michael Doehring, Caroline Doehring, Christopher Doehring, and Joseph Doehring.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Pius X Catholic Church on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 10 AM. Rosary will be recited at 9:35 AM. Interment will follow in Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Radney Funeral Home. Condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-mobile.com.
