Appie Sharp, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile was born November 2, 1923 and departed this life at age 96 on December 9, 2019 at her home. Appie grew up at 906 Dauphin St., and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she was later married. After grammar school at the Convent of Mercy, Appie attended Barton Academy and graduated from Murphy High. She also attended Randolph Macon College and the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Upon returning to Mobile, she was employed at the U.S. Interceptor Command and married Thomas E Sharp, Jr. in 1947. She spent each summer at her family’s Point Clear home and enjoyed sailing with her siblings and their friends in the family’s sailboat, the “Black Cat,” and swimming and crabbing on Mobile Bay. For many years she gathered weekly with the “bridge club” which mostly skipped the bridge in favor of a good visit with friends. She was a member of St. Ignatius Parish where she faithfully attended Mass for over 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Thomas E. Sharp, Jr., by her parents, Apollonia Manson Murray and John T. Murray, by her sister, Ann M. Meador, and brothers, John T. Murray, Jr. and Robert S. Murray. She is survived by her sister, Jean M. O’Neill, and brother, J. Manson Murray (Marietta), sisters in law, Lucille R. “Tita” Murray and Lorienne C. “Rennie” Sharp, by her son, Thomas E. Sharp, III (Mary) of Mobile, three grandchildren, Alice S. Johnson (Austen), Lila S. Sanders (Richard) and Thomas Murray Sharp (Emily) of Chattanooga, TN, and eight great-grandchildren, Thomas Lauten Johnson, James Stephen Johnson, Sally Hart Johnson, Alice Emily Sharp, Lucille Adaline Sharp, Charles Richard Sanders, Julia Sharp Sanders and Robert Haywood Sanders.
Visitation will be held in the Marian Center at St. Ignatius Church from 10 to 11 on Wednesday, December 11th, 2019, with a memorial Mass to immediately follow.
