Dr. Alice Stokes Ward, 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 21, 2020 in Montgomery, Alabama. Alice was born on April 12, 1932 in Mobile, Alabama. Alice received her Registered Nurse certificate from the Mobile Infirmary School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Huntingdon College, a Master of Nursing degree from The Medical College of Georgia, and a Doctor of Education degree from Florida State University. She served as a Professor of Nursing at the University of South Alabama and she also worked as a nurse at both Mobile Infirmary and Mobile General Hospital. Alice was a summer medical missionary in Nigeria for three summers and enjoyed being involved in Baptist Mission work in many locations. Alice was an avid reader and loved writing poetry. She also spent time collecting depression glass, studying American History and the country of England, and traveling.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents Clarence W. Stokes and Mildred W. Wilkins; one brother, Charles W. Stokes (Evelyn); and a niece, Sharon Stokes Hill.
She is survived by her sons, William A. Ward, Jr. (Helen) and Bruce J. Ward (Melanie); grandsons, Evan A. Ward (Mandy) and Forrest S. Ward; granddaughters, Kimberly Ward Cope (Travis), Emily H. Ward, and Madeline A. Ward; great-granddaughters, Cecily A. Cope and Margaret A. Cope; great-grandsons, Henry A. Ward and Arthur G. Ward; one nephew, Charles W. Stokes, Jr.; as well as a host of cherished friends.
Visitation for Alice will be held from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be at Pine Crest Cemetery.
