It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our uncle, William Edward Nemeth, who closed his eyes for the last time while resting peacefully at the age of 95 on February 28, 2023. He was a remarkable man who touched the lives of many and his legacy will live on through the memories he created and the lives he touched.
Born in 1927 in South Bend, Indiana, Uncle Bill was the middle child; his older sister Amelia Gizella and his younger brother Louis Anthony predeceased him. He was always fascinated by planes and was determined to become a pilot. While serving in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946 and in the Navy Reserves from 1951 to 1953, he earned four medals for his bravery and service. He then pursued his passion for aviation and became a licensed pilot.
Uncle Bill worked as an electronic engineer for Honeywell. He was trained on a gunnery system for airborne firefighter planes. He traveled around the country working with the Air Force teaching the pilots and maintenance crews about the gunnery system. This job took him to Japan, and then England. In 1957, he went to work for the Elgin Watch Company designing various tiny timers. They were making intricate timers for military operations. In 1962 Avco offered him a military electronics job as senior development engineer. Uncle also designed a command/destruct system for Jupiter (largest launch vehicle ever made). Later Uncle Bill worked for General Dynamics at a military electronics repair facility at Limburg airfield, and for Boeing in Seattle focusing on The Peacekeeper missile. Despite his independent and active life, he never lost his love for flying. He continued to fly his private plane well into his 80s, earning the admiration of all who knew him for his determination and passion for aviation.
In addition to his career and passion for flying, Uncle Bill was a real estate broker. He designed and built custom homes in Escondido, California and Port Orford, Oregon.
Uncle Bill was a devoted son and caregiver for his mother in her later years. He greatly loved his good friend of 37 years, Billie, and provided her with the best of care in her later years. Deep friendships meant a great deal to him, and many have lasted to the present. He has cherished spending time with his family, and has two nieces, two nephews, five great nieces, three great nephews, four great-great- nieces, and five great-great nephews. He was a strong-willed and determined man of faith.
Uncle Bill’s passing is a great loss to all who knew him. His legacy of independence, determination, and passion for life will continue to inspire and guide us for years to come. We take comfort in knowing that he lived a long, fulfilling life and that he is now at peace. May he rest in eternal peace with Jesus, knowing that he will be forever remembered and loved by his family and friends.
