James Reuben Wright of Trabuco Canyon, California passed away on July 17, 2024 at the age of 85. Jim was born on September 22, 1938 in Gooding, Idaho where he grew up and excelled in academics and athletics.
Jim graduated from Gooding High School in 1956 as valedictorian. He then proceeded to Brigham Young University on a scholarship to play football. After Jim’s freshman year at BYU he transferred to the University of Idaho where he completed his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Chemistry, graduating in 1965.
Jim became a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force following completion of his Doctoral degree. He served 27 years on active duty in several locations across the United States. Jim’s final assignment in the Air Force was to serve as the Commander of the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Jim retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1992. Following Jim’s military career he continued working in the field of education, beginning a second career as a chemistry professor at Saddleback Community College. He was promoted to the office of Dean of Math, Science, and Engineering in 1998; the office he held at his retirement in 2012. Jim then served on the Board of Trustees for South Orange County Community College District until 2022.
Jim was actively involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings including seminary teacher, young men’s president, high councilor, missionary and bishop.
He was preceded in death by his parents Reuben Albert, and Vera Toone Wright.
Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice Wright and children Lisa Currie (Jim), Brett Beasley (Rachael), Trisha Agueros (Richard), Stacy Shepard (Troy), and Greg Wright (Kellie). Jim and Janice are grandparents to 14 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Fairhaven Memorial Services located at 27856 Center Drive in Mission Viejo on July 25th. Family and friends are also invited to attend a viewing from 9:30 am-10:30 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 30522 Via Con Dios, Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The funeral will then begin at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at a later date at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
