Maria Guerrero de Casillas was born on August 18, 1937 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 in McAllen, Texas. Maria started her family with her beloved husband Juan in Mission, Texas. They moved to Joliet, IL in 1955 and raised 13 children together before retiring to Mission, Texas in 1995.
Maria was a strong woman of immense faith with a kind heart and generous soul, which she instilled in all of her children. It was in this spirit of faith, kindness, and generosity that she took numerous charitable trips to Mexico providing food, clothing, and monetary assistance to those in need. She was the pillar and matriarch of her family, cultivating deep familial bonds through generations of immediate, extended, and chosen family.
She was full of life, love, and laughter, which she often showed through cooking and entertaining guests. Maria was notoriously known for making the best tamales, playing Loteria, and storytelling; everyone knew they were going to have fun and feel welcomed when she was around. She was a true icon and though she will be missed, her legacy lives on in the spirit of giving, faith, and zest for life she fostered in her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Maria is preceded in death by her husband, Juan Casillas, and her daughter, Isabel Bernal. She leaves behind twelve children Juan “Johnny” (Diana), Ramon (Rosemary), Martha (Antonio) Cantu, Samuel, Rosa (Charles) Riley, Margarita “Margie” (Danny) Espinosa, Ruben, Guillermo, Anna Camacho, Mike (Cristina), Daniel “Danny” (Renee), and Juan Pablo. She is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who all loved her dearly.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11th from 10AM to 1:30PM at Funeraria Del Angel (3611 N Taylor Rd., Mission, TX). Funeral service will begin at 1:30PM. Burial commences at 3PM at Valley Memorial Garden Cemetery, 3601 N Taylor Rd., Mission, TX.
