I only met him once, about a decade ago. 
He was the kindest man I had met in a long time, and I still think of him. 
I am not surprised that he will be missed. 
To his family … don’t waste one second feeling sad… rather, know how fortunate you were.

No words can express how very sad and sorry we are for losing Dan, especially during this challenging time in the world where we can not mourn together with family and friends. Sophie and I are so grateful to have spent a lot of time with Dan and Monique last summer at their beautiful home in Mission. Observing Dan’s daily habits in (semi) retirement were very inspiring to me: he started his day by making  fresh coffee and breakfast, checking in briefly with the morning news, then make his way to the garden. One night, I saw him sitting comfortably and quietly, reading a book from his card catalogued personal library - a genuine intellectual. He was so good to his kids, his wife, and dogs, all of his friends and to us. He leaves behind a great legacy. We miss you Dan.

We feel blessed and honored to have had Dan as part of our family. We still can't believe he is gone.  When we last spoke to him in July on his birthday, he was happily telling us about their garden, their newly landscaped yard.  Monique and Dan created a beautiful and bountiful vegetable and flower garden, and Dan was very proud of all they accomplished together. We will miss him.

We are all  saddened to hear of Dan's passing. He and Monique were our neighbours and friends in the early years at Woodway Avenue in Ottawa, and we really enjoyed some lovely times together. Dan was always so willing to lend a hand or a tool -- I'll never forget him rescuing me from myself when I attempted to snow blow the driveway. Apparently, he and Monique, watching from the living room window, couldn't bear the sight of me struggling to navigate the huge snow drifts with that unweildy machine. What a relief it was to see Dan coming across the road, and then, in a very gentlemanly way, suggesting he complete the job. That's what Dan was, a true gentleman, and we'll always remember him as such.
