Tom attended Luverne High School, where he was a three- sport star athlete. He went on to attend Troy State before moving to Charlotte, NC. In 1964, he met his bride-to-be Peggy Ann Gathings. Their courtship was swift as they were married on March 21st, 1964, just two months after meeting. Tom and Peggy had 2 children, William Thomas Butts and Pamela (Butts) Redden. He was a devoted husband, father, and wonderful example for all who knew him. Tom’s greatest joy was being “Pappy” to his four grandchildren.
Tom worked for BellSouth for 38 years, retiring in September of 2002. Starting as a lineman, he worked his way up management and served as a supervisor of Service Technicians for over 20 years. His crew always ranked in the top percentage of the North Carolina region.
Tom accepted Christ at the age of 32, while attending Grace Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. There he served as a coach, RA leader, and a deacon for over a decade. Tom and Peggy then joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church in 1985. They were involved in Sunday School, served in the nursery, and he served as a deacon. Tom especially enjoyed Tuesday night visitation where he was able to share the Gospel with many in the community.
After retirement, Tom and Peggy continued to serve faithfully in many local ministries including The Cup Ministry, Hearts and Hammers, and serving at the soup kitchen in downtown Charlotte alongside of their 4 grandchildren. They were also heavily involved with the Baptist Men’s disaster relief, helping victims of flood and natural disaster throughout the United States.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Peggy and his two children; son, Tommy Butts, and his wife Sarah Butts and two sons, Sam and Ben; and daughter, Pam Redden, and her husband Tony Redden, and two daughters, Jordan and Paige.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2021, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Harris Campus Chapel, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Park.
