William "Gene" Baker

Gene was born in Monroe, NC on October 25, 1927, the son of Doc T. Baker and Hattie Mae Tadlock. Gene was an active, friendly and outgoing person who was loved by everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Gene retired from Whitin Machine Works and American Truetzschler. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, attending sports events including Panthers, Knights, UNCC 49ers, and Checkers. He enjoyed trips to the beach, traveling the U.S. with his brother Aaron, and sitting in his carport where many people waved at him as they drove by. Mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family and his faithful companion, his sweet toy poodle, Abby.

Gene is survived by his four sons, Rick (Cathy) Baker of Apex, NC, Doug (Debbie) Baker of Anderson, SC, Dennis (Sandi) Baker of Charlotte, NC, and Jeff (Audrey) Baker of Indian Trail, NC; sister, Dottie Brooks; brothers, Jimmy Baker and Smith Baker; grandchildren, Gabe Baker, Josh Baker, Matt Baker, Zach Baker, Tyler Baker, Krystle Benitez and Travis Baker; great-grandchildren Aubrey Baker, Ethan Baker, Hailey Benitez, Javier Benitez, Jr., and Bailee Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 10th, 2021 from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Road Mint Hill, NC 28227. A graveside service will follow at 2:30pm at Sunset Memory Gardens 8901 Lawyers Road Mint Hill, NC 28227. Military Honors will be provided by members of the North Carolina National Guard.
