His family will receive friends on Friday, February 3, 2012, from 6-8pm at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC. Ted’s service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 4, 2012, also at McEwen-Mint Hill Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, it was Ted's wishes for memorials to be given in his name to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC, 27565-2758, (919) 603-3958.
Ted was born July 2, 1948, in Albemarle, NC, to the late Hobert Lester Vanhoy and Ruby Jewell Coley.
He retired in 1992 with 24 years of Honorable Service from the US Navy. He was a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island, and his many accomplishments include but are not limited to, Vietnam Service Medal (Two Awards), Gold Wreath Recruiting Award (Seventeen Awards), Naval & Marine Corps Achievement Award (Two Awards) and the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal. During his career with the US Navy he had many duty stations and was very proud of being a Plank Owner for the USS White Plains AFS-4 that he served on during the Vietnam War and he advanced through the ranks to retire honorably at the highest rank for enlisted persons in the US Navy as a Command Master Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of Stanly Masonic Lodge #348 for over 25 years, a Life Member of the VFW, and a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Ted attended Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, and earned his AAS in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He also attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he studied Mechanical Engineering and continued his education at Valencia College, Orlando, Florida to obtain his Civil Engineering and Arts Degree in 1989.
Ted was a great friend and bright light in a gloomy world. His quick wit, positive attitude, technical advice, and infectious smile will be greatly missed.
Survivors are his wife of 38 years, Tamra Wells Vanhoy; Children, Sarah Vanhoy Westover and husband Andrew and Brian Vanhoy; Grandchildren, Catherine Westover and Madalynn Vanhoy; Sister, Mitzie Vanhoy Lanier and husband Sid and numerous loving family members.
