Samuel Reid Horton III ( Chip ) passed away February 2, 2017 at CMC-Main. The son of Anne Horton Palmer and the late S. Reid Horton Jr. he was born June 13, 1952 in Spartanburg, SC. He grew up in Rock Hill, Greenville, SC and Salisbury.
Chip received a BS degree from UNC-Charlotte and a MS degree from East Tennessee State University. He was a financial advisor for Edward Jones. He served on the regional leadership team and he had a passion for helping clients and recruiting and mentoring new financial advisors. Chip truly loved his job and considered it a gift from God.
Another great love in his life was participating in Boy Scouting with his two sons. He volunteered for 22 years as a den leader, cub master and scout master for Troop 158 in Charlotte. He was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and received the District Award of Merit. Favorite memories were hiking in Philmont, New Mexico and summer camp at Camp Grimes.
Activities involving the boys were top priority and one could always find Chip on the practice field timing track runs, holding the football for extra points, playing “horse” in the driveway or cheering at basketball, football and soccer games. Saturday mornings were special times out with the family for breakfast.
Chip was married 41 years to his high school sweetheart and best friend Donnell Peeler Horton. Together they enjoyed wonderful trips to Europe, Australia, Hawaii and many Caribbean Islands. Time at home often involved sleepovers with grandchildren who loved playing in the playhouse, learning magic tricks and jokes, swimming in the pool and making a restaurant or lemonade stand. Papa was always their first customer.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his two sons Jared Reid Horton (wife Shannon) of Charlotte and Seth Horton of Raleigh, his brother Michael Horton (wife Sherri) of Spartanburg, SC and father-in-law Leo Peeler of Harrisburg and a large extended family. He was “Papa” to Colin Reid and Isabelle Caroline Horton.
Chip was a member of Bethel UMC in Midland where he served on the finance committee. He was a former member of Third Presbyterian Church in Charlotte where he was clerk of session and taught Jr. High Sunday School. Chip believed in Jesus Christ as his Savior and understood the importance of faith and the uplifting effect of church families during difficult times.
