Paul Norman Gustafson died peacefully at his home in Mint Hill, North Carolina on Sunday, the 1st of June, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was 94.
Born September 21, 1919 in Kane, Pennsylvania, Mr. Gustafson was the son of the late Oscar Gustafson and Josephine Gustafson, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from Ohio State University, received a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University, and was a professor of civil engineering at Kansas State University and Carnegie-Mellon University. He later became a nuclear engineer for Westinghouse – first for the Bettis Atomic Power Lab in West Mifflin, PA, where he was instrumental in the design of nuclear reactors for nuclear submarines and the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, and then retiring as the Technical Director for the Plant Apparatus Division in Monroeville, PA.
An avid golfer, he served on the board of directors at Pine Lake Country Club in Mint Hill for several years.
Mr. Gustafson was preceded in death by his older brothers, Richard and David. He leaves behind his loving wife of 70 years, Ann; his daughter, Joanna Gandiza and her husband, Ron, of Mint Hill; son, Norm “Gus” and his wife, Lynn, of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A private service was held at McEwen Funeral Service in Mint Hill on the 3rd of June.
He was loved by all who knew him and will be remembered forever.
