Dempsey was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was married for 65 years to his loving wife Maxine who cared for him "in sickness and in health." He was the son of P.P. and Carrie Viola Smith Huneycutt. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife Maxine Funderburk Huneycutt and three sons, Glenn (Suzanne), Bruce (Kelleigh), and Eric (Julie). He was the loving Paw Paw of five grandchildren (John, Chad, Carrie, Brandon, and Savannah) and two great-grandchildren (Randall and Jenna). He also leaves behind three sisters, Carolyn King, Martha Jo Plyler, and Mavis Huneycutt, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dempsey was a life-long member of and served as deacon of Eastway Baptist Church. He was co-owner of Huneycutt Brothers Sand and Gravel, a business he formed with his brother Norman in 1953 and operated until retirement in 1999. He loved spending time with his family, relaxing at the mountain house, and traveling throughout the United States including Alaska, and overseas to Ireland. He loved driving the motor home to Florida, driving dump trucks for his business, and driving vehicles through the countryside.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Charlotte Lung and Health Center, Community Home Care and Hospice, and Senior Helpers. We appreciate their compassionate care during Dempsey's extended illness.
